Coleman was raised in the Lancashire town of Blackpool. She was a headgirl at Arnold School, Blackpool and had straight A's at her A levels. Discussing her role on Emmerdale Coleman said that she regrets that she did not have a traditional college experience. Coleman was in High School, was part of the theatre company In Yer Space. Steven Moffat of Doctor Who revealed in a news conference held on the 21st of March, 2012, that Coleman will be replacing Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat picked her for the role due to the ease with which she worked alongside Smith as well as the fact that she could speak faster than him.
